The Scribbles Newsletter
I often get asked what my favorite comic of mine is, and truth be told, it changes every year. Usually, it’s a comic in which I’ve managed to say something that’s important to me. This year, it’s this one:

A few weeks ago, I turned 32. And though I’m now two years into my 30s, it’s hard not to be influenced by what feels like a constant societal chatter about how being above 30 signifies one thing only: you are no longer young.
I’ve found my 30s to be in stark contrast with my 20s, but in a good way. When I reflect on where I was ten years ago at 22, I’d be hard pressed to change places with her. I recall everything feeling like a chaotic, confusing whirlwind. Having just been thrust out of college and into the real world, I didn’t know where anything was heading. Heck, I didn’t even know myself.
This was what I was reflecting on when I drew the original sketch for this comic:

I’m tired of the narrative that 30+ is gloom and doom. In my 30s I have a bright and colorful life, one filled with joy in my work, stability, and good relationships. A lot of these things were earned through painful lessons in my 20s. That’s not to say that I didn’t have some great times, but the process of becoming an adult can be extremely challenging. Truly stepping into adulthood and really being one—now that’s my cup of tea!
My goal with this comic was to counter the negative spin that your 30s gets and invite people to embrace and look forward to them. Yes, it can be sunshine and rainbows!
(And my skin still looks pretty nice too? Thanks, SPF!)
